How are Period and Ovulation Dates Calculated?
Period calculator calculations are projections based on your typical parameters:
1. Next Period Start Date:
Calculated by adding your average cycle length (e.g. 28 days) to the first day of your last period.
2. Ovulation Day:
Typically occurs exactly 14 days before your next expected period start date.
3. Fertile Window:
Consists of the 5 days leading up to ovulation plus the ovulation day itself (a 6-day span). Because sperm can survive inside the female body for up to 5 days, this window offers the highest possibility of pregnancy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common symptoms include changes in cervical mucus (becoming clear, stretchy, and wet like raw egg whites), a slight rise in basal body temperature, and mild lower abdominal discomfort on one side.
Your cycle length is the number of days from the first day of one period to the first day of your next period. A normal range is 21 to 35 days.
If your cycles are irregular, a calendar calculator is less reliable. In these cases, using ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) or consulting a physician is recommended.
